There are many fair tales about peony. It is related to Fairy Mother Goddess and a Chinese emperor named Wu Zetian. I thought that the later one was more attractive. One day, the only female emperor in Chinese history Wu Zetian enjoyed the beautiful snow scene in winter. She came up with an idea suddenly. She thought that if all kinds of followers bloomed, it would be more beautiful. So, as the Son of Heaven, she issued an imperial edict that every kind of flower should bloom tomorrow. The next day, all flowers bloomed except peony. Wu Zetian was angry about peony and demoted it to Luo Yang. However, in Luo Yang, peony bloomed better. In a word, peony is a unyielding flower.

The formal name of peony is Paeonia suffruticosa. Peony begins to bloom from April to May each year. It is originally produced in the northwest of China. With big petals and gorgeous colors, it represents for wealthy and prosperity. Peony has a history of more than 1500 years and there are about 180 varieties. Peony covers a lot of colors like red, white, pink violet, black, green and blue and so on. The height of peony is between one to three meters and the diameter of its petal is between ten to thirty centimeters.
Peony likes cool temperature and can not bear extremes of cold and heat. It can tolerate drought but is afraid of water. So plant peony in higher places just in case of water log.
Peony’s word is lead. According to the ancient European superstition, peony shines in the evening, which watches and takes care of sheep and prevents corps from damage. So peony is the patron saint of agriculture and poultry. Therefore, peony means lead.

It can heal diarrhea, scatter congestion and has the effect of antiemetic. Peony is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine. White peony was used for hypertension, chest pain, muscle cramping and spasms, and fever. It was an important remedy for female reproductive conditions ranging from dysmenorrhea to irregular menses. Red peony was used for bleeding or lack of blood movement, depending on how it was prepared. Moutan was used for problems characterized by bleeding, such as nosebleeds, bleeding wounds, or menorrhagia.
